Known as the “Gem of the Desert,” and touted by The Robb Report as “America’s ultimate golfing destination,” La Quinta, California sits among the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains at the heart of the Coachella Valley. 2,000-year old petroglyphs tell the stories of the ancient Cahuilla Indians. European settlement came in the 19th century bringing with it cattle, cotton and sugar cane farming. Then Walter Morgan opened the La Quinta Hotel in 1926 which quickly expanded into a resort and became a favored hideaway for Hollywood stars of the Golden Era. Home to roughly 41,000 today, La Quinta easily converts visitors to this “resort town” into residents.

If you like browsing window to window and strolling shop to shop, you won’t want to miss Old Town La Quinta consisting of the businesses which inhabit the rustic, Spanish inspired architecture of Main Street. These include everything from Old Town Antiques & Consignment to Lulu’s Fine Home Accessories, Tarah Jade Boutique, Homec Jewelers and Elizabeth & Prince, among others. Old Town also hosts the organic farmers’ market once a week. For more modern and every day shopping needs, residents and visitors will find The Plaza at Point Happy on Highway 111. After a day of shopping for goods, services or homes for sale, recharge with a delicious meal. In additional to the names you know such as Applebee’s, Schlotzsky’s, Red Robin and McDonalds, you won’t want to miss the local and regional favorites including Fisherman’s Market & Grill, The Cliffhouse, Desert Sage Restaurant & Piano Bar, La Quinta Stuft Pizza Bar & Grill and Solano’s Bistro. La Quinta is also home to Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant, Arnold Palmer is referred to as a “part-time resident” here.

La Quinta’s parks, preserves and trails encourage fitness and add to the richness of this community. Together with the La Quinta Sports Complex, the City’s 11 other parks include amenities such as playgrounds, baseball, softball and soccer fields, basketball and tennis courts, a dog park, a skate park and a community building and art pavilion. The Bear Creek Fred Wolff Nature Preserve dedicated in 2006 consists of about 20 acres set aside for protection of, and education about, the native wildlife in the area. Nearby, Lake Cahuilla Regional Park boasts 135 acres great for hiking, camping, boating and fishing.

While outdoor enthusiasts definitely thrive on all the golf (including the 525 acre golf Mecca that is the new Silver Rock Resort), wide open space and open air activities which can make up a life in La Quinta, there’s certainly something for anyone and everyone here. Indoor options include La Quinta Museum, the Old Town Artisan Studio and the non-profit La Quinta Playhouse, just to name a few. Take a short drive into the neighboring cities of Coachella, Indio and Palm Springs, and you’ll find additional museums and theaters as well as several casinos. Once you relocate here, you’ll enjoy a whole year full of activities. In January, for example, it’s great to spend a day or two taking part in the fanfare of the world class Bob Hope Classic golf tournament. Every March, the internationally known and nationally ranked La Quinta Arts Festival features the work of more than 200 artists. In April, La Quinta’s children participate in the annual Easter Egg Hunt. And it doesn’t stop there. Residents of La Quinta soon find there’s always a reason to be celebrating here.

20 elementary, seven middle and six high schools make up the public school district in La Quinta. Of those, George Washington Elementary and Palm Desert Middle are both charter schools. Kennedy Memorial hospital is just a little over five miles away in neighboring Indio.
