La Quinta is one of the Coachella Valley's youngest and most beautiful cities with a spirited essence underscored by the progressive winds of change. “The Gem of the Desert” was incorporated in 1982, making it the youngest city in the Coachella Valley. La Quinta’s history began in 1926 when a San Francisco hotelier opened the lavish La Quinta Resort & Club. Today the resort remains a dominant fixture in the city, with more than 640 guest suites and casitas, 25 swimming pools, a luxurious spa, meeting rooms, three golf courses and a nationally acclaimed tennis club.
Suddenly major superstores, newly constructed retail centers and professional buildings have appeared to support the abundance of families moving into the newly developed housing developments.
Along Main Street is Old Town La Quinta, a quaint and ever-expanding village of shops, restaurants, artisan bakeries, and galleries in an open-air setting. The colorful Spanish-style architecture creates an atmosphere that takes you back to the days of early California.
La Quinta plans many city-sponsored, family oriented activities throughout the year including the annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Dog Day (for city pooches and their owners) and community picnics. La Quinta boasts some of the world’s finest golf courses including PGA West™ and Rancho La Quinta that plays host to the SKINS Games. Each year the La Quinta Arts Festival welcomes the world to view the works of over 250 North American artists in the picturesque town center.
There are five parks including Fritz Burns Park, with lighted tennis courts and a water sculpture; the La Quinta Sports Complex, with ball-fields, playgrounds and basketball courts; Adams and Eisenhower parks featuring a walking trail and playgrounds; and Frances Hack Park that includes a community building and basketball courts. Lake Cahuilla County Park, a 135-acre reservoir surrounded by grass and date palms, offers recreational activities such as camping, boating, hiking and fishing.
