Cathedral City
Cathedral City is a city on the move. In a relatively short time, it has evolved from a quiet bedroom community to a progressive and family oriented metropolis, the third-largest city in the valley. The population of Cathedral City is comprised mostly of young family groups that enjoy peaceful, friendly neighborhoods with convenient access to streets of bustling commerce.
In 1850, Col. Henry Washington of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, named the area Cathedral Canyon, thinking the canyons resembled the interior of a grand cathedral.
The multiplicities of homes that dot the cityscape were built over the past 18 years. There is a perfect mix of country club estates in gated developments, single-family homes, condominium communities and mobile home parks.
Cathedral City maintains one of the area’s highest employment rates and one of the lowest crime rates in the Coachella Valley. The Community Police Services Program operates three offices in shopping centers to provide residents easy access to police and a higher law enforcement presence in the community. The 289-room Doral Hotel and Executive Suites Resort, with adjoining 27-hole Desert Princess Country Club, is a favored destination for conventions, corporate events and major gatherings. World-class golfing is available at The Desert Oasis Resort’s 27-hole championship course, located within the Cathedral Canyon Country Club.
Residents enjoy a wide array of services, restaurants and shopping — from major chains to local “mom and pop” establishments. Popular spots are the Desert IMAX Theater, Mary Pickford Theater, Boomers! Family Fun Park and the Ice Garden ice skating rink.
The city government successfully creates a culture of community and civic pride with the presentation of regular special events. A big favorite is Concerts in the Square, held once a month, offering a free three-hour concert, food vendors and booth exhibits where artists and business owners display their wares.
Cathedral City has realized tremendous growth, welcoming everyone to experience its diverse mix of small town, resort and big-city living.
