Get Set for Winter
As temps start coming down it’s time to start thinking about energy efficiency. It’s important to take preventative measures when heating your home to keep utility bills low and raise your overall comfort level.
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that heating accounts for at least 30 percent of an average home’s annual utility use.You can save as much as 20 percent on your home’s energy costs by installing an energy-efficient heating/cooling unit with properly sealed ducts. Sealing your ductwork can save up to $140 a year while saving on resources, too. Before you start for the thermostat, have a professional thoroughly clean and test your heating system and program your thermostat. Be sure to change your furnace filters once a month to keep the system running clean and efficiently. A home environment with air leaks around window panes and under doors can create a very uncomfortable scenario. ENERGY STAR reports that proper sealing and insulating improves comfort while saving up to 10 percent on annual energy costs. Caulk around your doors, windows, pipes, vents and electrical outlets. Check for drafts by holding a match or incense stick in front of any areas you suspect are not airtight. Adjust ceiling fans so the blades turn clockwise; pushing warmer air down and throughout the room. Winterize and save this season!
