What Does Your Credit Report Have to Say?
Have you checked lately? Your credit report is a complete summary of your personal information including existing debts and payment history, current and past information such as names, addresses and public records. It’s a collection of information provided by credit bureaus from your creditors. The agencies compiling data can sometime make unfortunate errors that will reflect negatively on the report and influence your all-important credit score. Keep an eye on your credit report, review it regularly, and exercise your right to dispute any inaccurate information, and request to have it removed from their records. You are permitted one free annual credit report from each of the credit reporting agencies to make sure your information is complete and accurate—and you haven’t been the victim of identity theft. The agencies are Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. Carefully review the information when you receive a copy of your credit report, and check for any variations in your name, social security number, or if addresses appear that have never been associated with you. Check the payment amounts and balances due. Make certain there are no delinquent medical bills, student loans, or any collection accounts on the report. Make a note of all inaccuracies, and send a dispute letter immediately to the credit reporting agency. Clearly outline the information that is incorrect or obsolete and provide the documentation to support your claim along with a picture ID. Request the information is removed and the report updated immediately.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows you 30 days for a full dispute investigation. When the investigation is complete, you will be notified of the information that has been removed from your credit file, and will be provided with an updated copy of your credit history.
