Packing Tips for Your Next Trip

Whether packing light for a quick weekend trip, or for a world-class trip abroad, be sure you include everything you need while keeping the important goal in mind: using as little space as possible. Right now, with most airlines charging extra for bags, packing efficiently is more important than ever. Here are a few helpful packing tips and techniques to keep top of mind.

First and foremost, create a master packing list and stick with it. The list can

help in keeping track of what you’ve packed, serve as an important reference document in case your luggage would get lost or stolen, and be a handy guide when it’s time for
re-packing at the end of your trip. Plan which outfits you will wear each day; consider every piece and accessory, and itemize it on your packing list by day and activity. Many pieces can be mixed and matched to transition from day to evening. Keep in mind the weather conditions of your destination, and have the right amount of wraps that coordinate with your outfits. Press everything before you pack; button and zip up and fold neatly. The interlocking method of folding clothes is ideal for suitcases. Overlap two pieces of clothing flat, and fold them into each other so that each piece cushions the other to avoid wrinkles. Placing a piece of tissue paper between each layer of clothing will also keep them looking neat. Be sure to pack tightly and eliminate wasted space.

Plan on leaving most of your jewelry at home, and take along the least expensive pieces so you don’t run the risk of being robbed, or losing something special while traveling. If you’re staying in a hotel, order toiletries ahead of time for your room and create even more space in your luggage. Invest in a waterproof travel tote to safely transport the toiletries you want to bring. Don’t fill travel-size bottles to the top with shampoo, bath gels, etc., as pressure inside the plane can cause contents to expand and overflow.

Remember the US Department of Homeland Security is restricting the amount of liquid products travelers can carry on a plane. Check with the airline if you are unsure of what is permissible at the current time.

Enjoy your trip!
