Home Safety

How safe is your home? Have you checked each room for potential safety hazards lately? Now’s the time to correct problems and implement preventative measures to avoid accidents in the home.

To prevent poisonings: keep all medications, cleaning solvents, grooming products, etc. far out of a child’s reach. Stow these items in upper cabinets secured with child safety locks.

To prevent falls: install grab bars in the tub and shower and use non-slip mats. Keep stairs and walkways free of clutter and have them properly illuminated. Make sure the kids always pickup their toys. Keep electrical cords behind furnishings and out of walkways to prevent trip hazards.

To prevent fires and burns: stay by the stove while cooking and try not to get distracted by other things and forget you have a pan on the stovetop. If you have a fire in a cooking pan, use an oven mitt to clap on the lid and move the pan off the burner. Use a fire extinguisher if you don’t have a lid at hand, and aim at the base of the fire, not the flames. Do not use water to put out a grease fire. Water can spread the grease and flames, so throw salt or baking soda to extinguish the fire, or smother it with a large wet towel. To prevent hot water burns, keep your hot water adjusted to a maximum of 120 degrees. Be sure all of your smoke alarms are operational, and have a working fire drill plan the whole family can learn and follow during an emergency.

Watch your children every minute when they are near water: pools, tubs, toilets, even a bucket of water.
