We all have to remember that even though we live in one of the most fabulous locations in the country, it does bear the distinction of being “earthquake country.” Every year we have a little shaker or two, but geologists do caution that the “big one” could strike at any time and we should be prepared at home and at work. Here are a few important tips to keep your home and business “earthquake ready.”

* Make sure shelving, entertainment centers, flatscreen TVs and bookcases are securely fastened to walls, and all large and fragile objects are placed on lower shelves. Pictures and mirrors should be hung away from sleeping and seating areas.

* Identify safe places to retreat to when an earthquake strikes. Dash under sturdy furniture, such as a desk or solid wood coffee table, and certainly away from windows and other breakables that could shatter.

*Prepare an earthquake kit packed with sustainable items to get you through the first few days after the event. Emergency services may not be available for awhile, so you and your family may be on your own. Have a can opener, canned goods, fresh batteries, a radio and plenty of bottled water on hand. Check and replace these items at least once a year to ensure they are always fresh and useable in case of an emergency.

*Be sure to keep your homeowner’s policy at an accessible place in case you need to refer to it following the event.

Advance planning and preparation can help you ride out the effects if “the big one” ever strikes.
