The Living Desert

It’s possible to enjoy a faraway excursion, and experience a safari adventure without going very far. At The Living Desert, you can get up close and personal with all kinds of exotic animals—from cheetahs, bighorn sheep, reptiles, rare birds, and amphibians—an amazing assemblage of all creatures great, large and small… many rarely seen anywhere on this continent. The Living Desert, located in beautiful Palm Desert, is a wildlife zoo and botanical park where you can hike through nature preserve trails and gardens flourishing with an abundance of desert flora. Visit the Discovery Center, Eagle Canyon, the Wildlife Hospital and Conservation Center, Palo Verde Garden Center and Nursery, the African Garden and Village Watutu. There is excitement at every turn, something to learn everywhere you look… and lots of new friends to meet. The kids will love the camel rides and a spin on the “Endangered Species” carousel, one of The Living Desert’s latest attractions. The Wildlife Wonders Show features presentations starring reptiles, mammals, birds and more. The Living Desert is an experience like no other. Where else in the desert can you see such an assemblage of graceful creatures, with many among the endangered species category! Visit with friendly giraffes and gazelles, exotic geckos, a majestic jaguar, birds and butterflies fluttering freely within serene aviaries, a beautiful cheetah, Arabian wild cat, and a host of welcoming critters that once made their home within the African desert.

The Living Desert’s Kumbu Kumbu Marketplace offers guests a selection of handcrafted African treasures including fashions made of hand-painted fabrics, jewelry, musical instruments, artifacts, books, toys and much more. The Living Desert was established in 1970, by trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum. The nature trail and preserve has grown into one of the most treasured attractions California, expanding from its original 360 acres to 1,800. Approximately 1,000 acres remain in their natural state. Set out and experience an African safari where no passport is required at The Living Desert.
