365 Things to Do in the Coachella Valley

Moorten Botanical Gardens

Spend an afternoon at Moorten Botanical Gardens perusing a virtual wonderland of native desert plants—around 3,000 specimens of them—including agaves, bombax, cardon and boojum trees, a pachypodium that stands two-stories tall, aloe plants and much more. The collections are grouped by their geographic regions: Arizona, Baja California, South Africa, South America and Texas. Take a look in the “Cactarium” greenhouse and discover thriving cacti and succulents—many rarely seen in the valley.

Moorten’s started as an arboretum in 1938, developed by desert enthusiasts Patricia Moorten, a biologist, and her husband “Cactus Slim” Moorten, a member of the original Keystone Cops. A great love and avid interest in desert plants and wildlife inspired

their project that grew over the years into the living star attraction enjoyed by hundreds of tourists and locals today. The Moortens developed landscapes for many celebrities including Frank Sinatra and consulted with Walt Disney on the landscape and design for western-themed Frontierland, one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland. Their son, Clark Moorten, continues the family tradition acting as the curator of Moorten Botanical Gardens. He tends the garden, greets guests, and shares his wealth of knowledge on desert succulents. There is something to interest everyone at Moorten’s, from the beautiful to the rare and exotic. Several varieties of nursery grown plants are  available for purchase.
